Yasaka Shrine holds the Gion Festival, one of Japan’s three largest Shinto festivals. In ancient times, the shrine was known as the Gion Shrine, so even today, it is generally known affectionately as “Gion-san” amongst Kyotoites. Utsukushigozenja is a small shrine within the Yasaka Shrine grounds where the Three Goddesses of Munakata, who are renowned for their beauty, are enshrined. In front of this shrine, there is a spring of sacred water known as “Beauty Water” that is said to make the skin and heart beautiful.
